Message to those with a
loved one who is incarcerated...
How do you deal with the pain of a loved one in prison? Most people will never think about it because that sort of problem always happens to “other” people.
How many mothers out there are devastated because their son, or daughter has been sent to prison? How many parents feel the guilt of what they should have done differently? How many have lost sleep worrying about the safety of their child in a dangerous and unknown environment?
What about us, the loved ones of people who are incarcerated, whose plans and dreams are shattered, who must now take on the responsibility for maintaining the household and raising children on our own? How many of us have family members and friends who have detached themselves from our lives as a result of this ‘situation?’
We give up our own dreams and lives, and put everything on hold for the loved one who needs us. Instead of enjoying family holidays or vacations, we spend our time worrying how to get our sons, husbands and loved ones out of prison; how to pay for attorneys or the exhorbitant phone bills to remain in close contact, and how to make the time our loved one spends in prison as easy as possible for him or her. Then ‘release’ brings with it another host of challenges.
But what about us? Who takes care of 'our' needs? Who is there for understanding and support? Many of us literally spend time in a prison of our own, isolated and alone because we feel no one out there understands what we are going through. Is there anybody out there who is going to care, who is going to listen, and most of all really 'hear' and ‘care about’ how I feel?
Society has no plan for those left behind, but the Poughkeepsie Area Family Support Group is comprised of people who know EXACTLY how you feel, because we have been there.
There is no judging in our group, and no fee to attend meetings … we simply offer complete understanding and unconditional support, so why don't you stop by and see what we're about!
